Aurora Awakes premiere this week

Unless there’s some crazy swine flu diagnosis within the Fairfax County School District, I’ll be flying to Virginia on Wednesday for Friday’s premiere of “Aurora Awakes.” The performance, with the Stuart High School Wind Ensemble, conducted by Doug Martin, will be at 7:30 on Friday night at Stuart High School in Falls Church. If you find yourself in Fairfax County on Friday night, I hope you’ll come by! I haven’t heard so much as a rehearsal recording of the piece yet, but I’m cautiously optimistic about the piece. More soon, I’m sure…

Dateline - Friday before the premiere:
Dear John - everyone at Stuart has had a great time during your visit this week and we can hardly work today for anticipating Aurora Awakes tonight. It even stopped raining this morning! We are passing around your Tanglewood-has-a-band post by email today. It's PERFECT! My violist was surrounded by her band friends when the post was discussed, and although they poked her as though she was Orchestra, she knows how Composer feels -- Band is her true love. Thank you for enriching the Wind Ensemble repertoire!

Just returned from the concert at Stuart. What a tremendously beautiful piece! I brought along my 10 year old, who is a budding flutist. She was riveted. Kudos to the band students at Stuart. It was a difficult piece, but for a high school band, they were phenomenal!
