Hill Country trip

AEJ and I are heading to Austin tomorrow for the premiere of “Undertow,” my new piece commissioned by Cheryl Floyd and the Hill Country Middle School band. (Yes, the “Undertow” link is now active.  The score is there, but obviously no audio yet — but there should be next week.) The piece premieres on Tuesday night at 7:30 in Bates Recital Hall at UT-Austin. Come by if you can! If you can’t, you can listen to the steaming webcast beginning a few minutes before 7:30 Central Time (or as I like to call it, Elvis Time).

We’re also looking for a place to live while we’re there. The showings include a few houses and a few townhouses. If all goes well, by the time we get back to LA next week, we’ll know when and where we’re moving.

That is if the weather there this weekend doesn’t make us completely change our mind. It’s 64 degrees in LA today.  It’s 97 degrees in Austin. Ouch.

I know you’re a Tool fan, that name wouldn’t happen to be influenced by the album/song would it?

I moved from Michigan to Austin when I was 24. I think I needed to thaw out after the worst winter on record, so all I remember is LOVING the heat! But, I will tell you that the best way to acclimate is to actually get outside and learn to sweat. Spending time on the lake, being able to jump in the water when you start dying is another good way to learn to love the heat and Austin.
Throw away your sweaters. You won’t need them.

    Well, Mr. Mackey,

Not only is everything bigger in Texas, but it’s hotter and more humid, too.

Try living in Houston. Ha, ha.
